Mexico City Grand Prix

I love Mexico City, the race and the people, despite some bugger pinching my iPhone in 2021 in a large crowd.

The Autodromo Hermano Rodriguez is one of the shortest tracks on the F1 calendar and unlike any other track, it winds its way through a baseball stadium. The two stands are packed full on race day and although you’ll have to sit on concrete instead of bucket seats, the atmosphere during quali and the race is electric, especially when local driver Sergio Perez enters.

The other unique thing about the track is the podium presentation which takes place in the stadium, about 200 metres from the paddock exit. The drivers have to walk through a corporate area en route to the podium and once the presentation is over a DJ takes control pumping up an already enthusiastic crowd that has flooded onto the track.

While many might think Mexico City is a cheap place to visit, that’s not the case come Grand Prix time. Hotel rates are sky high and the general admission rate for this race is the 4th highest of all races.

When it comes to accommodation, security is an important consideration. The safest places to stay are supposedly Polanco and along the Av. Paseo de la Reforma. The tree-lined streets of the Polanco area are lovely and there is normally a strong police presence in the main tourist areas.

There are numerous 4 and 5 star hotels in the city and English is widely spoken. The Mexican GP is right up there on my favourites list and I have no doubt you too would enjoy it.
