Middle Eastern VS Asian LUXURY airlines!

Departure from Osaka

It’s another travel day, starting with Singapore Airlines to Singapore, followed by Gulf Air to Bahrain. Check-in was quick, and security was smooth. If you have an APEC card, definitely use that gate; it saved me around 15 minutes waiting in the immigration queue.

Check-in experience at Osaka airport

Currently, I’m at the Kix Kansai Lounge, and I must say, I’m impressed. It’s my first time here, and I don’t think I’ve ever flown internationally out of Osaka. Last night was quite the adventure with a bus ride, two train trips, and a $200 taxi to get to the airport hotel for my early morning flight.

The buffet here is plentiful, featuring some decent spirits, Prosecco, and beer, along with soft drinks available from a machine. I have an overnight stay in Singapore because I initially booked a round trip from Perth to Osaka, which would have led to a long layover. However, I changed my return flight to a later date and decided to skip the first sector from Perth to Singapore.

Onboard Singapore Airlines

Now, I’m seated in 15A on Singapore Airlines, where there’s no row 13. I’m a big fan of Singapore Airlines; their staff is some of the best in the air, equating their warmth and hospitality to that of the Japanese. With English as their first language, it ticks all the boxes for me.

This flight lasts just shy of 6 hours in a lie-flat seat, though it’s not their best business class seat. The A380 seat is even more spacious. However, for a 6-hour flight, this setup is just fine.

After takeoff, we were served chicken satays. I’d love to hear if anyone thinks Malaysian Airlines’ chicken satays are better. About an hour later, it was lunchtime with prawns and a fillet of beef, which I pre-ordered using their Book the Cook system. I’d rate the steak a solid 7 out of 10. The meal ended with a tasty ice cream dish and some nice cheeses.

Singapore Airlines delivered an impressive flight, but would Gulf Air be able to top it? Only time would tell.

Exploring Singapore

After clearing immigration, I headed into the city, staying at the Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel, which is stunning. The lobby is an open-air space, with no air conditioning or doors, right in the heart of Singapore. The rooms are stylish with magnificent balconies overlooking the void, but the service can be frustrating due to a lack of training or resources.

After a pleasant 24 hours in Singapore, it was back to the airport. Changi Airport is one of the best in the world, featuring high-end retail and a range of dining options. I headed to the SATS Premium Lounge, which is mid-level but offers comfortable seating and reasonable food options, including good mashed potatoes.

Flying with Gulf Air

After a bit of a scare with my passport, I finally made it to the Gulf Air flight to Bahrain. The seat layout is interesting, with a staggered 2-2-2 configuration that feels more private than Singapore Airlines. The lie-flat bed is a huge plus, and there’s no box for your feet, which I absolutely love.

Arabic coffee and a date were offered before takeoff. The menu had some intriguing options like chicken ghoozi, braised beef short ribs, and ricotta and eggplant cannelloni. While the menu presentation could use some work, I was eager to see how the food would compare to Singapore Airlines.

Our meal service began with crab salad, followed by the braised beef short ribs, which I’d rate a 6.9 out of 10. I appreciated the in-flight entertainment options, especially the ability to watch movies on the handset.

The Verdict

Both flights were impressive, but if I had to pick a winner, it would be Gulf Air primarily due to the comfort of the seat. However, if comparing Gulf Air to Singapore Airlines’ A380 business class, Singapore would win hands down.

Upon arrival in Bahrain, there were no lines at immigration, and my luggage arrived promptly, which was fantastic. It was around 25 degrees outside, with a light breeze blowing. Now, it’s off to the La Meridien Hotel, excited for a week at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
