Day one of the Singapore GP and thankfully the haze lifted a bit and it wasn’t oppressively hot. Let’s start with the Rich Energy logo disappearing from the Haas car. They’ve ceased as a sponsor and the car now looks a little different.
Another Haas announcement today with both the current drivers being retained for 2020 and Robert Kubica announcing in the press conference that he won’t be driving for Williams next year.
Lewis Hamilton was sporting plaits as you can see here. He surprised most of the photographers by coming in from the lesser used paddock entrance on his scooter. I managed just a couple of shots before he reached the sanctuary of the Mercedes hospitality suite. Two funny incidents involving Lando Norris tonight. The first involved him and Carlos Sainz Jr. The pair turned up for a TV interview with Sky TV and found that their chairs were both facing the cameras. One of them, and I missed seeing which one, turned Lando’s chair away from the other as a joke. They hammed it up a bit before Lando’s chair was returned to its normal position and the interview continued.
The second involved him and Daniel Ricciardo at the press conference. Daniel got into Lando’s head prior to the start of the conference telling him he couldn’t get 10 seconds into his first answer without laughing. He failed the test. And while we’re talking about Daniel, how about his new beard? I got out my star filter and shot Kimi heading to a media commitment after the sun went down. Earlier in the day I found Charles Leclerc chatting with Charaf-Eddin Ait-Taleb. I spot this fellow around the paddock often; he’s blind and is known to a few drivers. Guenther Steiner was looking serious at the precise moment I opened the shutter here.
And at some point I went out to see how many fans had assembled at the entrance to the paddock hoping to spot their favourite driver and came across these Japanese fans amongst others.
Ferrari were active in their pit lane early practicing pit stops. And the final pic I’ll share with you tonight is this one of Alex Albon with his hand on his heart. I’d like to tell you there’s an interesting story behind the shot but there was none. Just a nice pic to end the day, day 1 of the 2019 Singapore GP.
